(My Sportsbook) - Roy Halladay tries to extend his club-record winning streak to 10 consecutive starts tonight when the
Toronto Blue Jays begin a now rain- shortened two-game set against the
Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. Tuesday's series opener was postponed due to rain and will be made up on Thursday, July 3.
Halladay, who was 19-7 a year ago, started the year 0-2 through his first six starts, but has rebounded to win nine straight and broke Roger Clemens' 1997 team- record with a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old righthander, who has pitched to a 3.91 ERA this year, held the Pirates to one run on eight hits over eight innings in that outing, while striking out nine and walking just one.
Halladay has gone 7-2 with a 2.52 ERA against the Orioles for his career, and was unbeatable against them last season, as he posted a 4-0 mark with a miniscule 0.93 ERA against the O's.
The Blue Jays picked up their sixth win in seven tries on Sunday, as Reed Johnson led off the first and 10th innings with homers to lift Toronto to a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs.
Johnson drilled a Mark Guthrie offering over the wall in the 10th for the game-winner, as Toronto took two of three in the weekend series. Johnson, who notched the first multi-homer game of his career, also contributed a sacrifice fly and became the first player since Anaheim's Darin Erstad three years ago to start and end a game with a homer.
Tom Wilson finished 1-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI for the Blue Jays, who completed their homestand 5-1. Vernon Wells finished 1-for-4 and is riding nine-game hitting streak, batting .359 (14- for-39) during that stretch.
Baltimore, meanwhile, also comes into Wednesday's series opener on a high note after taking two of three from the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend. On Sunday, Tony Batista and Deivi Cruz each hit two- run homers to lead Baltimore to a 5-4 win over the Brewers in the rubber match of their three-game interleague set.
Rodrigo Lopez, who was activated from the disabled list earlier in the day picked up the win. Lopez (1-3) permitted three runs -- two earned -- on six hits over 6 2/3 innings, while striking out one for the Orioles, who have won three of their last four outings after a 1-7 slide.
Jorge Julio worked the ninth inning and picked up his 15th save of the season.
Omar Daal gets the call for the Orioles on Wednesday and is 4-7 on the season with a 5.06 ERA. The 31-year-old lefthander has lost his last two starts, including a 7-6 setback to the Chicago Cubs in his last outing. In that contest he allowed five runs - four earned - on five hits over five innings.
Daal has one start in his career against the Jays and yielded one earned run on four hits over seven innings to earn the win.
Toronto has dominated this series over the last two years, winning 27 of the 38 games played. The blue birds have also had the upper hand at Camden Yards, where they have won 14 of their last 19 matchups.
The Blue Jays will play the Orioles seven times in June and 12 times after that.
