East Rutherford, NJ (My Sportsbook) - With their season-opening unbeaten streak now at seven games, the
Tampa Bay Lightning try to remain the National Hockey League's lone club without a loss tonight when they visit the
New Jersey Devils at the Meadowlands.
Off to the best start in franchise history, the Bolts are 5-0-2 to this point, including Friday night's 3-2 home victory over Washington. Chris Dingman and Dave Andreychuk scored 51 seconds apart in the first period, and goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin turned aside 25 shots to earn first star honors.
Fredrik Modin also scored, while Vincent Lecavalier added a pair of assists in his first game back after sitting two tilts with a sprained knee. The Bolts' seven-game unbeaten streak ties the team record for consecutive games without a loss, which was recently reached last March 10-22.
Andreychuk, meanwhile, drew closer to some personal history with the 248th power-play goal of his career. He is now one shy of matching Phil Esposito's NHL record for man-advantage tallies.
As a team, the Lightning have converted at least one power play in eight consecutive games, dating back to last season. That is tied for the second- longest streak in club history, trailing the record set last winter by one game. From February 26-March 17, the Bolts bagged a power-play score in nine straight contests.
Khabibulin, meanwhile, improved to 24-4-4-3 in his Tampa Bay career when the Lightning score at least three goals for him.
Tampa Bay opens a brief road trip tonight, and will visit Florida on Monday. In all, the Bolts play five of their next six games away from home.
New Jersey, meanwhile, begins a four-game homestand this evening after winning five of its first six games (5-1), all by a one-goal margin. On Friday night the Devils posted a 2-1 victory over the host Sabres, as Sergei Brylin scored the game-winner off a deflection 1:00 into the third period. Ken Daneyko also tallied, and Martin Brodeur continued his torrid start with a 23-save showing.
Daneyko ended his NHL-record streak without a goal at 255 games when he broke a scoreless tie 17:07 into the first.
Brodeur, meanwhile, has been spectacular to start the campaign and leads the NHL with five wins in the early going. He has recorded a 1.67 goals-against average and .932 save-percentage, helping the Devils allow a mere 10 tallies.
Jersey resumes its home set on Tuesday against Carolina, and will also welcome Chicago and Calgary to town during the stand.
Tampa Bay went 3-0-1 against New Jersey last season after losing the previous five meetings. The Devils hold a 10-4-1 advantage in the last 15 clashes overall.
