Washington, DC (My Sportsbook) - The Washington Wizards released assistant coach Brian James on Friday. Newly-signed head coach Eddie Jordan decided not to retain James, who has one more remaining on a three-year contract. "I felt that it was important to make this decision quickly, in an effort to allow Brian a chance to pursue other opportunities," Jordan said in a statement released by the team. "He is a solid NBA coach with great credentials -- really one of the good guys in the league -- and I'm sure he will have numerous offers very soon." James joined Washington before the 2001-02 campaign. He was also an assistant with the Toronto Raptors for three seasons. "I am continuing to finalize my decisions on the coaching staff for next season, and will have another announcement in the very near future," Jordan noted. Jordan, who was the New Jersey Nets' lead assistant for the past four seasons, agreed to a four-year deal with Washington on Thursday. He is the 20th head coach in franchise history. Meanwhile, Wizards GM Wes Unseld announced that guard/forward Bryon Russell did not exercise his option for the 2003-04 season. Russell, who averaged 4.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and one assist per game last season, will become a free agent.
