Cleveland, OH (My Sportsbook) - The
Cleveland Indians will name either Eric Wedge or Joel Skinner the 38th manager in team history at an afternoon press conference on Tuesday.
Published reports on Monday have indicated that the 34-year-old Wedge, who managed Cleveland's Triple-A team in Buffalo the past two seasons, will be chosen over Skinner, who guided the Indians in 76 games as interim manager when Charlie Manuel was fired on July 11.
However, a team spokesman told the My Sportsbook on Monday that no decision has yet to be made. The spokesman did indicate that the job will belong to either Wedge or Skinner, and that the announcement will be made on Tuesday.
If Wedge is chosen, he will become the youngest manager in the majors. He led the Buffalo Bisons to a 178-108 record and was named The Sporting News' minor league manager of the year this past season.
Wedge played in 39 games in the majors with Boston and Colorado after helping Wichita State win the NCAA championship as an All-American catcher. He was drafted by the Red Sox in 1989.
Skinner, who was the Indians' third base coach under Manuel, led the Indians to a 35-41 record as the interim manager. The 41-year-old spent nine seasons as a catcher in the majors, including three with the Indians from 1989-91. Skinner, who also would become the youngest manager in the majors, also played for the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees.
Wedge, Skinner and Fredi Gonzalez, who managed Atlanta's Triple-A Richmond team, were the only candidates formally interviewed by the Indians.
Cleveland finished the 2002 season in third place in the American League Central with a 74-88 record, 20 1/2 games behind the Minnesota Twins.
