Boston, MA (My Sportsbook) - Outfielder Gabe Kapler inked a minor league contract with the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday. Kapler, who was given his unconditional release by the Colorado Rockies last Thursday, will report to Single-A Lowell on Thursday because that is the only club playing in the area that day. He will move on to Double-A Portland for a Friday doubleheader. "He's a right-handed hitter, he's a tremendous defensive outfielder at all three positions. He's an above average runner, an above average thrower. He's a threat with the bat," Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said. "We think he can fit our club nicely. If he performs well in the minor leagues and there's a need up here, it could work out nicely." The 27-year-old Kapler was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs on June 3 after hitting just .224 with no home runs and four RBI in 39 games for the Rockies. Colorado obtained Kapler along with outfielder Jason Romero in a trade with the Texas Rangers last season for outfielder Todd Hollandsworth and pitcher Dennys Reyes.
