=== Four-run ninth lifts Yanks past Rays ===
St. Petersburg, FL (My Sportsbook) - Juan Rivera hit a game-tying three-run homer and Todd Zeile doubled in the go-ahead run, as the New York Yankees scored four times in the ninth inning to rally for a 10-9 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Tropicana Field.
John Flaherty added a two-run homer for the Yankees, who bounced back from a 4-2 loss in Monday's four-game series-opener and won for the fifth time in six games. Derek Jeter chipped in two hits and three runs scored in the victory.
Marlon Anderson belted a grand slam and Rocco Baldelli contributed a solo homer for the Devil Rays, who lost for the eighth time in 10 tries and have not won back-to-back games since May 15-16. Tampa Bay is just 4-18 in its last 22.
The Devil Rays have also yet to win three straight games all season and manager Lou Piniella has stated that he will dye his hair the color of the team's choosing if they win three in a row.
The Yankees trailed 9-6 heading to the ninth, but tied the game on Rivera's first homer of the season. Raul Mondesi led off with a double against closer Lance Carter (4-3) and Flaherty grounded an infield single up the middle to put runners on the corners. Rivera then belted a 1-2 pitch over the center field wall.
The rally continued when Jeter was hit by a pitch with one out and he raced home from first with the go-ahead run on Zeile's double to the gap in right- center.
Jason Anderson (1-0) notched his first major league win with an inning of hitless relief and Mariano Rivera worked around a hit and a walk in the ninth to post his 10th save.
The Devil Rays had taken a 9-6 lead in the bottom of the seventh, as Marlon Anderson's first career grand slam highlighted a five-run inning. Aubrey Huff led off with a single against Chris Hammond and walks to Ben Grieve and Travis Lee loaded the bases. Al Reyes came on and struck out pinch-hitter Jason Tyner, but Anderson drilled a 2-0 pitch deep into the right field seats to give Tampa Bay an 8-6 lead. Carl Crawford kept the inning alive with a two-out infield single, then stole second and scored when third baseman Robin Ventura misplayed a grounder by Julio Lugo for an error.
Tampa Bay's big inning denied Yankee starter Jeff Weaver his first win since May 15 against Anaheim. He gave up four runs -- three earned -- on nine hits with two walks and one strikeout in 5 1/3 innings.
Dewon Brazelton started for Tampa Bay, but couldn't make it out of the second inning. The young righthander, who could be on his way back to the minors, pitched just one inning-plus and was charged with three runs on two hits and four walks.
The Yankees left the bases loaded in the top of the first when Ventura struck out and the Devil Rays grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the inning on Baldelli's fifth homer of the season.
New York went ahead with four in the second. Mondesi led off with a walk and Flaherty followed with a drive over the left field wall for his first homer as a Yankee. Rivera then singled, ending Brazelton's night, and Alfonso Soriano greeted Jorge Sosa with a base hit. One out later, Jason Giambi singled home Rivera and Jorge Posada added an RBI base hit to give the Yankees a 4-1 lead.
The Devil Rays got a run back in the second when Marlon Anderson doubled and scored on a two-out throwing error by Jeter, then added a run in the third on a bases-loaded RBI grounder by Anderson to make it 4-3.
The Yankees answered with two in the fourth. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Hideki Matsui, who bounced a base hit through the middle to score a run. Ventura then singled home another run for a 6-3 lead, but Brandon Backe got out of the inning by fanning Mondesi and inducing a double play grounder from Flaherty.
Tampa Bay picked up another run in the sixth. Marlon Anderson singled with one out, took second on a walk to Damian Rolls and scored on a base hit up the middle by Crawford. Hammond replaced Weaver and retired the next two batters he faced to end the inning.
The Yankees won despite stranding 15 runners. New York improved to 2-26 when trailing after eight innings. Every Yankee had at least one hit. Zeile, who was 1-for-27 before his ninth-inning double, was in the game after Giambi left the contest with a bruised right forearm. X-rays were negative.
Marlon Anderson set a career high with five RBI. Grieve snapped an 0-for-14 slump with a single in the third inning.
