Cincinnati, OH (My Sportsbook) - Major League Baseball announced disciplinary action against
Cincinnati Reds starter Paul Wilson, infielder Russell Branyan, and
Chicago Cubs reliever Kyle Farnsworth for their actions during the teams' June 19th matchup at The Great American Ball Park.
Wilson received a five-game suspension and was fined an undisclosed amount for intentionally hitting Cubs outfielder Moises Alou with a pitch in the top of the seventh inning, and for fighting in the bottom of the frame.
Farnsworth was suspended three games and fined an undisclosed amount for fighting with Wilson.
Branyan was fined an undisclosed amount for his actions, which caused both benches to clear for a second time.
The trouble in the 3-1 Reds' win started when Cubs starting pitcher Mark Prior threw behind Cincinnati catcher Jason LaRue in the sixth inning. Wilson hit Alou with the first pitch of the seventh, and the tone of the game intensified.
With Wilson at the plate and squaring to bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning, Farnsworth threw a chest-high, inside pitch. Wilson stepped away from the offering, which got behind catcher Damian Miller for a wild pitch.
Wilson then shouted at Farnsworth and stepped toward the Cubs pitcher. Farnsworth advanced and the two met near the plate. The 6-foot-4, 235 pound reliever body-slammed Wilson, then threw punches that connected with Wilson's face. The pair were piled on top of by teammates, and Wilson left the field with his uniform bloodied.
Both suspensions are scheduled to begin on June 26, unless appealed. If appealed, the suspensions will not occur until the process has been satisfied.
