Boston Red Sox Team Report - June 28 ===
(My Sportsbook) - History was made time and time again on Friday night as the Boston Red Sox dismantled the Florida Marlins in the opener of a three-game series, 25-8.
Johnny Damon had three hits and three runs batted in during a record-setting 14-run first inning during the Interleague tilt. Damon tied the modern-day record for hits in an inning with three, also done by Boston's Gene Stephens in 1953.
Damon finished 5-for-7 in the contest and Manny Ramirez hit a three-run homer in the first for the Red Sox, who set a major-league record by scoring 10 runs before recording the first out in the first inning. The Philadelphia Phillies held the previous record of nine, doing it on August 13, 1948 against the New York Giants. The first 11 batters reached base for Boston, which won its fifth straight game and tied the American League record for most runs scored in the first inning.
Bill Mueller ended 4-for-5 with a home run and a career-high six runs batted in for Boston, which also tied a franchise-record with 28 hits.
Byung-Hyun Kim was the beneficiary of the offensive onslaught, picking up the win despite allowing five runs -- four earned -- and seven hits in five innings of work. Kim won for just the second time in seven starts since joining the Red Sox.
Five Red Sox (Damon, Ramirez, Todd Walker, David Ortiz and Trot Nixon) scored twice in the first inning, tying an AL record achieved five other times, but there were still more highlights to come for the club.
Unfortunately not all of them were positive as Walker lined a pitch back up the box in the seventh inning and nailed reliever Kevin Olson in the back of the head.
Olson was conscious when he was taken from the field on a stretcher and to Beth Israel Deaconesse Medical Center for further examination. He is listed in good condition and his injuries are not considered serious.
Following last night's offensive explosion, the Red Sox will try to keep Florida at bay as they send Tim Wakefield to the hill.
The 36-year-old knuckleballer has been suffering with a back injury but is still expected to make the start this evening.
In his last appearance on Monday he pitched six shutout innings, giving up just four hits and walking a pair while striking out five, in what turned into A 3-1 win for him.
The victory was the first in nearly a month for Wakefield, who has a 2-3 career mark versus the Marlins, with a lofty 5.40 ERA. Obviously control has been a bit of a problem for the righthander against Florida, walking 19 batters against 20 strikeouts in 30 innings of work.
