Toronto Blue Jays Team Report - June 28 ===
(My Sportsbook) - The Toronto Blue Jays target their third straight win and the Pearson Cup this afternoon when they continue their three-game Interleague set against the Montreal Expos at SkyDome.
In the series opener on Friday, Shannon Stewart drew a one-out walk in the ninth inning to force home the winning run, as Toronto eked out a 6-5 victory over their Canadian counterparts.
Toronto is 3-1 against the Expos this season and with a win in either today's contest or tomorrow's series finale, it will lay claim to the recently restored Pearson Cup. Both teams announced earlier in the year that after a 17-year absence, the Cup would be awarded to the winner of the six games between the two clubs. The Blue Jays took two of three from Montreal last weekend at Olympic Stadium.
Roy Halladay started for the Blue Jays on Friday and threw eight innings, but didn't earn a decision as his streak of 11 straight victorious starts came to an end. His last no decision came in a 6-5 Blue Jays' victory against Kansas City on April 25. Toronto hasn't lost a game he's started since a one-run setback to the Boston Red Sox on April 20.
Stewart also belted a solo homer for Toronto, which improved to 15-8 in the month of June. Vernon Wells, who extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a first-inning single, added a solo shot, while Eric Hinske finished with three hits in the win.
Stewart's homer in the seventh knotted the score at 5-5, and the Blue Jays remained patient at the plate in the ninth to earn the victory.
Julio Manon, who entered the game in relief of starter Livan Hernandez after the seventh, was on the mound for Montreal in the ninth. He walked Reed Johnson to lead off the frame and then surrendered a single to Hinske. Dave Berg then sacrificed both runners, and Mike Bordick drew a clutch walk to load the bases.
Stewart stepped to the plate next and worked a full count before looking at ball four, securing the Blue Jays' 19th come-from-behind victory of the season and guaranteeing them a winning record for Interleague play.
Trever Miller (1-0) picked up the victory, allowing just one hit in a scoreless ninth.
The Blue Jays, who are 36-16 since May 1, remain in third place in the American League East, three games back of the first-place New York Yankees and a game behind the Boston Red Sox.
Heading ot the mound for Toronto will be 27-year-old southpaw Doug Davis, who is 4-4 on the season with a 4.76 ERA. Davis picked up his first win in four starts in his last outing against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday. In that contest the Sacramento, CA native surrendered two runs on five hits over six innings in his team's 13-4 rout.
This will be his first start against the Expos.
Blue Jays slugger Carlos Delgado, who leads the league with 25 homers and 86 RBI, is just 1-for-15 against the Expos this season.
Toronto is now 21-14 all-time against the Expos, while posting a 12-6 mark at SkyDome against them since the inception of interleague play in 1997.
Toronto is also 10-6 against the Senior Circuit this season.
The Blue Jays have won 19 of their last 25 at home and are 22-17 in Toronto this season.
The Pearson Cup, which was established in 1978, was named after former Canadian Prime Minister and ardent baseball fan Lester B. Pearson and awarded to the winner of a mid-season exhibition between the two Canadian clubs. However, the Cup was last awarded back in 1986 when the Blue Jays captured a 5-2 win.
