Montreal, QC (My Sportsbook) - The
Texas Rangers traded closer Ugueth Urbina to the
Florida Marlins in exchange for three minor league players and cash considerations.
In the deal, Texas receives pitcher Ryan Snare, first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and outfielder Will Smith.
"We are very excited about the talent we are acquiring in this trade," said Texas general manager John Hart. "With this deal, we are continuing to add young players who we feel will be able to contribute to our major league club. All three players were high draft picks and adding talent of this caliber certainly strengthens our organization."
Urbina was 0-4 for Texas this season, but tallied 26 saves. The righthander's ERA is 4.19 and he has also struck out 41 batters, while only allowing 18 walks.
Urbina was an All-Star last season with Boston and finished the year with 40 saves and a 3.00 ERA, but was not offered arbitration by the Red Sox. His 2002 campaign was highlighted by converting 22 of his first 23 save opportunities to earn his second All-Star appearance, then finished the year with 10 saves in September.
He has collected 200 saves in nine seasons with Montreal, Boston and Texas.
Snare was originally drafted by Cincinnati in the second round of the 2000 draft. Florida acquired Snare in the Ryan Dempster trade on July 11, 2002. Snare went 5-4 with a 3.67 ERA in 18 starts for Double-A Carolina of the Southern League this season.
Gonzalez, the first overall pick in the 2000 June amateur draft, hit .307 in 36 games for Carolina
Smith has batted .299 over four minor league seasons after being the Marlins' sixth-round selection in the 2000 draft.
