Murray and Carter to enter Hall of Fame Sunday

Cooperstown, NY (My Sportsbook) - They were teammates for a short time, but now Eddie Murray and Gary Carter will receive the ultimate honor together as they enter the Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday.

Murray, a first baseman and designated hitter who played the majority of his career with the Baltimore Orioles, was a teammate of Carter's in 1991 when they both played for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Murray is just the 38th player elected to the Hall in his first year of eligibility. Carter, a catcher who broke into the majors with Montreal, was chosen in his sixth try.

For the 47-year-old Eddie Clarence Murray, Sunday will be special not just because it will mark a lifetime achievement, but also because he will enter the Hall one year after high school teammate Ozzie Smith was elected.

"Nothing could be better," Murray said recently in a visit to the Hall of Fame for his orientation for the induction ceremony. "It's a pleasure, growing up the way we did. We just loved the game - the way everybody loved the game back in the '60s. Ozzie and I just happened to stick at it. We had a burning inside to do this."

Murray hit 504 homers and had a .287 batting average over his 21 seasons (1977-97). He joined Hank Aaron and Willie Mays as the only players to have at least 500 homers and 3,000 hits and is the only switch-hitter to accomplish the feat.

The American League Rookie of the Year in 1977, Murray won three Gold Gloves consecutively from 1982-84 and finished in the top 10 in the AL MVP voting seven times. The eight-time All-Star holds the major league record for most sacrifice flies (128); most games played by a first baseman (2,413); and most assists by a first baseman (1,865).

Murray, who spent the first 12 seasons of his career in Baltimore, helped the Orioles to an American League pennant in 1979. He hit .417 with five RBI in the ALCS win over the Angels, as the Orioles gained their first World Series berth since 1971. The Orioles, who lost their first 21 games of the 1988 season, traded Murray to the Los Angeles Dodgers before the 1989 campaign. He signed a lucrative contract with the Mets and spent two seasons in New York (1992-93), then went as a free agent to the Cleveland Indians before being dealt back to the Orioles for the conclusion of the 1996 season. Murray spent 1997, his final season, in Southern California playing 46 games for the Angels and nine for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The 49-year-old Carter, who played five seasons for the Mets, helped lead the team to the 1986 World Series title. He broke into the majors with the Expos and spent 11 seasons in Montreal. He played in 1990 for San Francisco and in '91 for the Dodgers before returning to the Expos for the final year of his career.

Known as "Kid", Carter will become the first player to enter the Hall as a member of the Expos. He played 19 seasons mostly as a catcher, was selected to 11 All-Star teams and ended his career (1974-92) hitting .262 with 324 homers and 1,225 RBI. He ranks sixth all-time in homers among catchers (298) and had nine 20-homer seasons, three seasons with 30-plus doubles, and four 100-RBI seasons. He also holds the major league record for catchers with most career putouts (11,785) and total chances accepted (12,988). A three-time Gold Glove winner (1980-82), Carter was the MVP of the All-Star Game in 1981 and '84.

Bob Uecker, voice of the Milwaukee Brewers and the most recent recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award, will be inducted into the broadcasters wing of the Hall of Fame during the induction ceremonies. The 68-year-old Uecker has called Milwaukee Brewers games the last 34 years, including 25 as the lead announcer.

Known for his saying "Must be in the front row!" during a beer commercial, Uecker spent six seasons playing in the major leagues with the Braves, Cardinals and Phillies. He earned his broadcasting break after opening for Don Rickles at a nightclub in Atlanta in 1969 and has appeared on several network TV shows and in movies, including Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show", "Mr. Belvedere", "Major League" and "Major League II". He has also authored the book called "Catcher in the Wry", which recounts his major league career.

Ohio sports writer Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News, who won the J.G. Taylor Spink Award for meritorious contributions to baseball writing, will also be honored. McCoy is covering the Reds for the 31st consecutive season.
