Tampa, FL (My Sportsbook) - Ty Wigginton went 4-for-4 for the second straight game, and James Shields tossed seven strong innings as the
Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat the LA Angels of Anaheim, 8-3, in the opener of a three-game series at Tropicana Field.
Wigginton, who also knocked in two runs, tied a club record with eight consecutive hits. He also went 4-for-4 during a loss to the New York Yankees on Sunday. The mark ties Aubrey Huff, who had eight straight hits for the Rays from September 22-24, 2004.
"I'm up there doing the same thing I've been doing all year," said Wigginton. "I haven't changed a thing."
Carlos Pena and Josh Wilson also knocked in two runs apiece for Tampa Bay, which won for just the third time in its last 19 games.
Shields (8-5) allowed seven hits and two runs, walked one and fanned two. The effort was good enough to temporarily reserve a tailspin for the right-hander, who began the season with wins in six straight decisions before dropping five of six.
"I looked at my last game and felt my arm angle was a little down," said Shields. "I felt today I had more of a down angle. I was using my cutter a lot tonight."
Jose Molina had a two-run single and Brandon Wood added a run-scoring single for the Angels, who have gone 10 consecutive games without a home run for the first time since July 7-21, 1991, when they went 11 straight without a long ball.
Ervin Santana (5-11) yielded seven runs and 14 hits, walked four and struck out four in six innings for the Angels, who have lost two straight. Santana has dropped a career-worst five straight decisions and six of eight overall.
"I just missed a couple of pitches," said Santana. "I just have to keep pitching and try to win. I don't worry about pitch count, I just worry about making good pitches. I don't have to prove nothing to anybody, I just have to pitch. You have to keep your focus and do your best."
With the game tied, 2-2, Tampa then broke it open in the home half of the fifth. Carl Crawford was the catalyst to a big five-run inning courtesy of a lead-off walk. B.J. Upton poked a ball through the right side, both scored on a Pena double, and Delmon Young legged out an infield single. Two batters later, Wigginton drove home Pena with a base hit before he was tagged out on his way to second.
Dioner Navarro then walked, stole second, and a two-run single by Wilson made it 7-2 before Akinori Iwanmura flied out to end the inning.
An RBI single by Wigginton gave the Rays a six-run cushion in the seventh, while Wood cut it to 8-3 in the ninth with his RBI single off Casey Fossum.
The Devil Rays scored twice in the third to take the early lead. Crawford started things with a single to right, stole second, and advanced to third when the ball sailed into center field. Upton followed with an RBI single, and Pena also ripped a base hit before Upton scurried home on Young's liner up the middle.
The Angels tied things in the fifth, as Casey Kotchman singled, Maicer Izturis doubled and both scored on Molina's two-run single.
