Washington, DC (My Sportsbook) - The Washington Capitals avoided arbitration with forward Michael Nylander and re-signed him to a one-year contract Sunday. Financial terms of the deal were not released. The 30-year-old Nylander registered 17 goals and 43 assists in 80 games for Washington and Chicago last season. The center was acquired from the Blackhawks in November, along with two draft picks, for center Andrei Nikolishin and enforcer Chris Simon. In the 2003 playoffs, Nylander notched three goals and two assists in Washington's first-round loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Over parts of 10 NHL seasons with the Hartford/Carolina franchise, Calgary, Tampa Bay, the Blackhawks and Capitals, the native of Sweden has totaled 139 goals and 294 assists for 433 points and is a plus-47 for his career.
