Oakland, CA (My Sportsbook) - The
Golden State Warriors will open their 2002-03 season on Wednesday by attempting to snap a 16-game losing streak to the
San Antonio Spurs.
The Spurs last fell to Golden State back on March 4, 1998, when they suffered a 90-83 loss in Oakland. San Antonio has since won eight straight on the road against the Warriors. The Spurs have swept the season series from Golden State the last three campaigns.
In San Antonio's season-opener on Tuesday, Malik Rose had 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Spurs downed the three-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers, 87-82.
Tim Duncan added 14 points and 10 boards for the Spurs, who won their sixth straight season-opener. However, Duncan was just 3-of-14 from the field.
Speedy Claxton chipped in 11 of his 13 points in the second half to help the Spurs to the win. Emanuel Ginobili finished with seven points and four steals in his first-ever NBA game, while starting point guard Tony Parker was 0- for-10 in the contest.
Golden State hired Eric Musselman as head coach in the offseason to help turn around its sagging franchise. At 37, Musselman is the youngest coach in the NBA and will head one of the youngest teams in the league.
The Warriors' starting backcourt is especially young, as the team will start a tandem of second-year players in Gilbert Arenas and Jason Richardson.
Antawn Jamison will likely see action at power forward this season with first- round pick Mike Dunleavy Jr. playing the small forward position. Dunleavy, the third overall selection in the 2002 draft out of Duke, provides much-needed help in the team's perimeter shooting.
The Warriors ended the preseason with a 3-5 record.
Golden State posted just 14 home wins last season, which was tied for the fewest in the NBA with Chicago.
