(My Sportsbook) - Just how loaded with talent are the
Sacramento Kings?
Sac-town is so deep that it crushed the Cleveland Cavaliers by 27 points, 94-67, in its season-opener Tuesday while playing without its starting backcourt of Mike Bibby and Doug Christie.
Bibby is on the injured list recovering from right foot surgery and is expected to be sidelined for about another month. Christie was suspended for the first two games of the NBA season for his role in the bizarre altercation with the Lakers' Rick Fox in the preseason.
While most teams would struggle to come up with solid replacements at the guard positions, the Kings have the luxury of supplementing Hedo Turkoglu and Bobby Jackson.
Turkoglu came into his own during last year's postseason filling in for an injured Peja Stojakovic and seems poised for a breakout season. Jackson has always been a strong candidate for the Sixth Man of the Year Award since joining the Kings prior to the 2000-01 season, and would probably be the starter on most NBA teams.
If the backcourt wasn't strong enough, reserve point guard Damon Jones, who the Kings signed on October 18 for insurance at the position, netted a game- high 18 points in Tuesday's win. Usually known for his defensive prowess, Jones shot 7-of-10 from the floor, including hitting 4-of-6 three-pointers.
"I felt very comfortable," said Jones. "Guys were fighting and fortunately for me I was getting open shots and they were going in."
Jones was one of four Kings to score in double-figures, with not one of them being named Chris Webber or Vlade Divac. Webber, who had nine points on just 4-of-13 shooting, did the job on the boards with 14 rebounds, while Stojakovic scored 17 points, Gerald Wallace added 15 and Turkoglu chipped in 14.
But the Kings' greatness may be more evident on the defensive end, as the Cavs were held to just 67 points on 32.5 percent shooting (27-of-83) from the field Tuesday. The Cavs' point total was the lowest by a Kings opponent since the team moved to Sacramento in 1985.
Keon Clark, signed as a free agent in the offseason, had five blocks and nine rebounds to go along with eight points in his Sacramento debut.
Cleveland's big gun, Darius Miles, shot just 6-of-22 from the field for 13 points in a frustrating first game with the Cavs.
"The Kings are gonna be a team to reckon with," said Miles. "I think they have a chance to break Jordan's old record."
A 73-9 season for the Kings? As if beating the Lakers wasn't hard enough.
