Arizona Diamondbacks Team Report - August 14 ===
(My Sportsbook) - The red hot Diamondbacks shoot for their fifth straight victory tonight, when they go for a sweep of the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.
Arizona has won seven of its last eight overall to pull within 1 1/2 games of wild card leader Florida. The Diamondbacks are also just one contest back of second place Philadelphia.
On Wednesday, the Diamondbacks posted a 3-1 win over the Reds, giving them 16 straight victories in the series dating back to May 7, 2001 at Bank One Ballpark. Luis Gonzalez snapped an eighth-inning tie with a two-run homer to lift the D'Backs to the victory. Raul Mondesi and Steve Finley each had a pair of hits in the contest.
Stephen Randolph (7-0), who allowed just one hit in a scoreless seventh, recorded the win for Arizona. Oscar Villarreal pitched a hitless eighth and Matt Mantei struck out one in the ninth to earn his 17th save.
Miguel Batista failed to record a win in his fifth straight start for the Diamondbacks, but this one could hardly be considered his fault. He gave up only one run on nine hits and two walks, striking out six over six innings.
The Diamondbacks will hand the ball to rookie righthander Brandon Webb this evening. Webb, a local guy from Ashland, KY, is winless (0-3) over his last five starts. The hurler suffered a tough luck loss to the New York Mets last week, allowing three hits and two runs over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out 10 and walked five in the losing effort.
Webb will be facing the Reds for the first time in his career. The 24-year-old has been excellent on the road this year, posting a 3-3 mark with a razor thin 1.74 ERA.
Arizona is 29-32 on the road and has lost 11 of its last 14 games outside Bank One Ballpark.
