Honolulu, HI (My Sportsbook) - Timmy Chang, starting quarterback for the University of Hawaii, will not play in the Warriors' August 30 opener against Appalachian State due to a violation of an academic rule set by the Western Athletic Conference. "This is an unfortunate situation for Timmy and our football program," associate athletics director Tom Sadler said. "As a member institution, we are obligated to comply with the WAC and NCAA rules, but it was clearly impossible for us to do so for purely technical reasons." The "six credit" rule, which Chang violated, requires that student-athletes pass at least six credit hours in the most recently completed term to be eligible to play. Chang also was held out of the ConAgra Foods Hawaii Bowl last December due to the violation. University officials reported the infraction to the WAC Conference and later to the NCAA. The NCAA reinstated Chang on the condition of him missing his team's season opener. The WAC Council reprimanded and fined the university back in March. "Sometimes life is fair and sometimes it's not," Warrior head coach June Jones said. "This is not fair, but we will deal with it, play without him for the first game, and move on. I always use the term `midstream adjust' with my team and that's what we will do."
