St. Paul, MN (My Sportsbook) - The Northwest Division-leading Minnesota Wild try to push their unbeaten streak to six games tonight when they welcome the San Jose Sharks to the Xcel Energy Center.
Minnesota has suffered just one loss in the early going, a 5-3 setback to the reigning-champion Detroit Red Wings on October 19. Since then the Wild are 4-0-1, and tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning for the most points in the National Hockey League -- 16.
Minnesota passed a significant test earlier in the week with a 1-0-1 home-and- home set against the Colorado Avalanche. On Sunday the clubs skated to a 3-3 tie in Denver, and the Wild posted a 3-2 overtime victory two nights later in front of a sold out home crowd.
Lubomir Sekeras scored 3:43 into OT to secure the win, as he wristed a shot past goaltender David Aebischer after a backhand pass from Sergei Zholtok. Marian Gaborik and Zholtok also scored, while Manny Fernandez turned aside 21 shots.
Fernandez has been nothing short of stellar to this point. After last year's horrid showing, he is 6-0-0 with a league-leading 1.48 goals-against average and .949 save-percentage.
Gaborik, the reigning NHL Player of the Week, is off to a strong start in his third NHL season. The 20-year-old leads the Wild with 14 points and is tied with Andrew Brunette for the lead at six goals.
Minnesota's has recorded a power play goal in five consecutive contests (7-27, 26%) and in nine of their first 10 contests this season.
Veteran Cliff Ronning, meanwhile, carries a five-game points streak into this evening. He has a goal and seven assists during the tear.
Minnesota plays the second installment of a three-game homestand tonight. Jacques Lemaire's club hosts Vancouver on Saturday.
San Jose, meanwhile, hopes to snap a two-game losing streak and break out of a 2-4 slump. The Sharks have fallen to Chicago and Detroit in their last two outings, including Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Red Wings.
Captain Owen Nolan scored a pair of second-period goals for the Sharks, but Detroit's Sergei Fedorov matched his effort, and broke a 2-2 tie 2:12 into the third period.
Goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, making his second start since signing a new contract, allowed three goals on 22 shots. He has been beaten six times on 43 shots since returning.
San Jose plays the fifth match of a six-game road trip tonight. The swing concludes Sunday in Anaheim.
Minnesota went 2-0-2 against San Jose last season, and the all-time series is tied at 3-3-2. The Sharks are winless in their last three trips to St. Paul (0-2-1).
