Vancouver Canucks will hope to get their first win on their current four-game homestand tonight when the set at GM Place concludes against the
Colorado Avalanche.
Vancouver, which is 1-3-2-0 on its home ice this season, is currently 0-1-2 on its current stand, including a 1-1 tie with the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.
Ed Jovanovski scored the lone goal for Vancouver, while Dan Cloutier made 30 saves. The Canucks have won just once in their last eight (1-3-4).
Jovanovski scored the first goal of the game on a power play with 3:56 left in the second period. He first rang a shot off the post, but got the puck back at the left point and sent another shot toward the net. Todd Bertuzzi was in front of Buffalo goaltender Martin Biron, who never saw the puck going past him.
Buffalo tallied with 2:39 left in regulation to square the game, as the Canucks have been outscored 10-3 in the third period at home this season.
The Canucks had a power play to start the extra period after Buffalo's Alexei Zhitnik was whistled off for holding with six seconds remaining in regulation. Vancouver worked the puck around the perimeter on the power play in overtime, but saw most of its shots go wide.
Vancouver was 1-for-9 with the extra-skater and have scored just twice in their last 38 chances with the man-advantage. However, the Canucks did kill off all seven of Buffalo's power plays and is 29-for-30 on the penalty kill at home this season.
Following tonight's game the Canucks will embark on a four-game road trip that will include visits to Minnesota, Colorado, Dallas and Phoenix.
Colorado also enters Thursday's tilt winless in its last two (0-1-1) after a 3-2 overtime setback to the upstart Minnesota Wild.
Joe Sakic had both goals for the Avs and is now 12 shy of 500 for his illustrious career.
David Aebischer got the start for the Avalanche and filled in for Patrick Roy admirably, making 20 saves for Colorado, which at 11 points is five behind the Wild in the Northwest Division.
Colorado has allowed a power-play goal in six straight games and has converted just 6-of-55 chances this season.
The Avalanche has won three of the last five meetings, five of eight and six of the last 10. of the last 10.
In the last 19 matchups, Colorado is 12-5-2 and in its last nine in Vancouver it is 5-3-1.
