PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Ryan Howard homered and drove in four runs as the Philadelphia Phillies snapped a four-game losing streak with a 14-2 rout over the San Diego Padres on Sunday.

Howard, the reigning National League MVP, ended a season-high 11-game homerless drought and finished with three hits and three runs scored.

Jayson Werth went 5-for-5 with four RBIs and Chris Coste hit a three-run homer for the Phillies, who moved within three games of the NL wild card-leading Padres.

San Diego, which led the majors in ERA (3.51) coming into the game, surrendered 14 runs and 17 hits, both season highs. The Padres had won four in a row to move within two games of Arizona in the NL West.

Kyle Kendrick (7-3) pitched six strong innings for the victory. He gave up one run and six hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

John Ennis pitched three innings in his Phillies debut for his second major league save.Dodgers 6, Mets 2

NEW YORK (AP) - David Wells pitched five effective innings in his Dodgers debut and Los Angeles salvaged the finale of the three-game series.

Juan Pierre and Matt Kemp each had two hits and two RBIs for the Dodgers, who pulled within 3 1/2 games of wild card-leading San Diego. Rafael Furcal also went 3-for-4 and scored two runs.

Wells (6-8) allowed seven hits and two runs, walked three and struck out two in his first game in 20 days. He was 0-3 with a 14.04 ERA in his previous four starts before San Diego cut him loose earlier this month.

Mets starter John Maine (13-8) was charged with six runs, three earned, and nine hits in 5 2-3 innings. He is 1-3 with a 7.77 ERA in five starts this month.Cardinals 4, Braves 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Adam Wainwright allowed a run in seven sharp innings, Juan Encarnacion homered and St. Louis handed Atlanta its fifth loss in six games.

Yadier Molina and So Taguchi each drove in a run in a three-run fifth off Jo-Jo Reyes (0-2) for the Cardinals, who took two of three in the series. The defending World Series champions are one game below .500 for the second time during a 4-2 homestand. The Cardinals have not reached .500 since they were 6-6 on April 16.

Mark Teixeira had two hits and Brian McCann had an RBI single in the sixth for the Braves, who began the day a season-worst seven games back in the NL East, and are 0-7 in Reyes' starts. The Braves remained four games behind the San Diego Padres in the wild-card race.

Wainwright (12-9) scattered six hits on Sunday, and in 17 innings overall against Atlanta has given up two runs with 17 strikeouts.Rockies 10, Nationals 5

Elmer Dessens (2-1) gave up a run and three hits in six innings for his first Colorado win. It was his first win as a starter since April 25, 2004, with Arizona against San Diego.

Holliday and Todd Helton had three hits each, and Troy Tulowitzki drove in three runs for the Rockies. Chris Iannetta, called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs late Saturday night, went 2-for-5 with an RBI in his return.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Pedro Feliz scored from first base on Rich Aurilia's single to right field in the eighth inning, and San Francisco finished off a three-game sweep of slumping Milwaukee.

The Brewers have lost four in a row and seven of their last 10 to drop to 25-40 on the road.

With two outs, Aurilia hit a high fly ball off Scott Linebrink (4-5) that landed between right fielder Corey Hart, second baseman Rickie Weeks and the foul line. Feliz scored easily when Hart's throw traveled up the third base line.

Steve Kline (1-2) pitched the eighth for his first win of the season and Brad Hennessey got the final three outs for his 14th save in 16 chances.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Catcher Ryan Jorgensen's first grand slam helped 29-year-old Tom Shearn win his long-awaited major league debut, and Cincinnati won its sixth straight.

The rookie pitcher and his minor-league catcher kept the Reds on their best surge of the season. Since interim manager Pete Mackanin took over on July 3, Cincinnati has the NL's best record at 29-19.

The foundering Marlins have lost 11 of 12, falling a season-high 17 games under .500 at 57-74.

Shearn (1-0), called up from Triple-A Louisville before the game, limited the Marlins to four hits in seven innings, including Dan Uggla's three-run homer.

Jorgensen, his catcher at Louisville before an Aug. 14 promotion, hit his first career grand slam in the first inning off rookie right-hander Daniel Barone (0-2) to help Shearn settle in. Brandon Phillips and Edwin Encarnacion also homered off Barone.Astros 5, Pirates 4

HOUSTON (AP) - Ty Wigginton hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth inning, and Houston rallied to avoid a sweep.
