Pittsburgh, PA (My Sportsbook) - University of Pittsburgh starting quarterback Rod Rutherford could face charges after a 19-year-old woman filed a criminal complaint early Monday morning.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that the woman filed a police report after an alleged incident took place in the parking lot behind Philthy McNasty's, a Station Square bar and grill.
According to the complaint, the woman said that Rutherford was in a car with her and two friends, and made advances toward her. She claimed that he got out of the vehicle and grabbed her arm, trying to remove her from car, when she rejected his advances.
The woman further claimed that Rutherford then shattered a car window with his foot as she drove away, with the woman being hit with some of the shattered glass. She also alleged that she bumped her head during the incident, but did not seek immediate medical treatment.
Rutherford, on the other hand, said that he reacted when the woman threw a glass at him in the parking lot. No charges have been filed as of yet, and Rutherford is cooperating with authorities, according to his attorney.
"We're constantly driving home the message to our kids about their conduct and off-the-field activities," said Pittsburgh head coach Walt Harris.
Harris further stated that the team was "continuing to gather all of the information" about the incident, and that no decision would be made about Rutherford's status until the investigation is complete.
The 10th-ranked Panthers open their season Saturday against Kent State at Heinz Field. If Harris suspends Rutherford, sophomore Tyler Palko may get the start.
A fifth-year senior, Rutherford passed for 2783 yards and 22 touchdowns last season on 52.3 percent passing. He also ran for 398 yards and six touchdowns, and is considered a Heisman Trophy candidate.
