(My Sportsbook) - The
Detroit Tigers try and keep their playoff hopes alive this evening, when they play a makeup game against the
Toronto Blue Jays at Comerica Park.
This game was originally supposed to be played on April 5, but was postponed because of cold weather.
Detroit finds itself four games back of the New York Yankees in the AL wild card race and six games behind the Cleveland Indians in the AL Central. With a win today, though, the Tigers could pick up a half-game on the idle Yankees.
Detroit had its four-game winning streak stopped with Sunday's 14-7 home drubbing at the hands of the struggling Seattle Mariners. Curtis Granderson had a brilliant game in defeat, however. The Tigers outfielder was 4-for-4 with a solo homer, two runs scored and his 20th stolen base of the season.
Granderson became just the second player in big league history with at least 30 doubles, 20 triples, 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in a single season. Frank "Wildfire" Schulte first accomplished the feat in 1911 with the Chicago Cubs.
Jeremy Bonderman (11-9) was blasted in defeat, surrendering six runs on seven hits in just 1 1/3 innings. The right-hander said after the game that he will have tests for pain in his elbow.
Getting the call tonight for the Tigers will be veteran Kenny Rogers, who is winless since July 4. Rogers, who is 3-2 with a 4.78 ERA this year, pitched well on Wednesday in his first start since July 25, as he held the Chicago White Sox to a run and two hits in five innings. The left-hander did not factor in the decision of his team's 2-1 win.
Rogers missed the first two-plus months of the season with a blood clot in his left shoulder, then was placed back on the disabled list after just six starts on July 30 with inflammation in his left elbow.
The 42-year-old hurler is 14-9 lifetime against the Blue Jays with a save and a 3.75 ERA in 54 games, 27 of which have been starts.
The Blue Jays, meanwhile, had their slim playoff hopes take a hit over the weekend. The club dropped two of three to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, including a 3-2 setback on Sunday at Tropicana Field.
Aaron Hill homered and scored twice for the Blue Jays, who have lost four of six and are now 8 1/2 games back of the Yankees and 4 1/2 behind the Tigers.
Toronto starter Jesse Litsch (5-8) was tagged with the loss after giving up all three Tampa Bay runs on seven hits through five-plus innings. The rookie right-hander, who has lost four of his last five decisions, struck out five and didn't issue a walk.
Hoping to get the Blue Jays back on track tonight will be right-hander Roy Halladay, who is winless in his last four starts. Halladay was tagged with the loss on Tuesday against the Boston Red Sox, as he allowed five runs and nine hits in eight innings to fall to 14-7 and had his ERA raised to 3.94.
Halladay did throw his fifth straight complete game in the loss and leads the majors in that category with seven.
The 30-year-old righty beat the Tigers the last time he faced them and is 11-2 in his career against them with a 1.83 ERA in 14 games (13 starts).
Detroit has split its six games with the Blue Jays this season and is 14-11 in the matchup since the start of the 2004 campaign.
