San Francisco, CA (My Sportsbook) - The San Francisco Giants have agreed in principle with Brian Sabean to keep the senior vice president and general manager with the team. Sabean, who originally took the organization's GM reins after the 1996 campaign, has turned the Giants into the National League's second-winningest team over the past six seasons, including their first World Series berth since 1989 this past year. The Giants also claimed the NL West in 1997 and 2000. "He quickly rebuilt our club after his hiring in 1996, has constructed an excellent six-year track record of winning teams and has taken us to the World Series," team president Peter A. Magowan said. "Brian has clearly distinguished himself as one of the premier general managers in the game today. We feel fortunate that our team is in extremely good hands for the future with Brian and his staff." During his six-year tenure as GM, Sabean has acquired All-Stars Jeff Kent, Robb Nen, Kenny Lofton, Reggie Sanders, Andres Galarraga, Ellis Burks, Joe Carter, Roberto Hernandez, Wilson Alvarez and Jose Mesa. "While we've reached a number of our goals here at the Giants, we will continue to strive for the ultimate one -- bringing a championship to San Francisco," Sabean said. "I would not be here if I did not believe that our ownership is committed to reaching that goal." Now that the general manager position is solidified, the Giants will concentrate on the status of their managerial position with Dusty Baker's contract expired.
