(My Sportsbook) - The
New York Yankees try once again to wrap up their 13th straight postseason appearance this evening when they play the second game of their three-game series with the
Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Tropicana Field.
The Yankees have already clinched at least a tie for the wild card, but were denied the spot outright on Monday, as they wasted a five-run lead and fell in extra innings in the series opener, 7-6, when Dioner Navarro led off the 10th frame with a solo home run.
Navarro, an ex-Yankee farmhand, crushed a hanging changeup from Jeff Karstens (1-4) over the wall in right to win it, as the Devil Rays won their second straight game on the heels of a five-game skid. Jorge Velandia added a grand slam in the win.
Jason Hammel started on the hill for Tampa Bay and allowed five runs on seven hits en route to the no-decision. Gary Glover (6-5) won it by pitching a perfect 10th.
Alex Rodriguez had a grand slam for the Yankees, who fell three games behind Boston in the AL East with just five games to play. New York, which leads Detroit by 4 1/2 games in the wild card, will also secure a playoff berth with one more Tigers loss.
New York will send right-hander Chien-Ming Wang to the hill tonight, as he tries for the third time to nail down win No. 19. Wang, who is 18-7 with a 3.72 earned run average, gave up a pair of runs (one earned) and six hits over seven innings to the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday, but did not factor in the decision of his team' 5-4 extra inning loss.
Wang has faced the Devil Rays 10 times and is 5-4 against them with a 3.90 ERA.
Tampa will counter with left-hander J.P. Howell, who is 1-5 this season with a 6.80 ERA. Howell dropped his fourth straight start in his last outing last Wednesday against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, as he allowed two runs and five hits in six innings.
Howell is 1-1 lifetime with a 5.00 ERA in three starts against the Yankees.
The Yankees have split their 16 matchups with the Devil Rays this season and are 21-13 against them over the past two seasons, including a 9-7 mark in St. Petersburg.
