(My Sportsbook) - Current Philadelphia defenseman Jason Smith makes an early return to Edmonton tonight, as the Flyers are set to battle the Oilers at Rexall Place.
Smith played with the Oilers from 1998 through all of last season before being dealt to the Flyers this offseason, along with forward Joffrey Lupul, for forward Geoff Sanderson and defenseman Joni Pitkanen. Smith, who captained the Oilers from 2001-07, tallied 113 points (31 goals, 82 assists) while with Edmonton.
Now the captain of the Flyers, Smith wasn't a factor in the Flyers' season- opening 3-2 victory over Calgary on Thursday, but another offseason pickup was. Center Danny Briere netted two goals, including the game-winner with under two minutes left in the third to cap his Philadelphia debut in a big way.
Briere, who signed a lucrative eight-year deal in the offseason, also scored in the first period for the Flyers, who made several changes to their roster this summer after finishing last year with the worst record in the league.
With the game tied and time winding down, Simon Gagne emerged in the neutral zone with a loose puck and moved the disc up to Briere, who skated in all alone on Miikka Kiprusoff and lifted the puck just under the crossbar to give the Flyers a 3-2 lead.
Martin Biron finished with 24 saves to preserve the victory for Philadelphia, while Gagne had two helpers. Mike Knuble added a goal and an assist in the win.
Tonight's game is the second of three straight on the road to begin the season for Philadelphia, which doesn't open the home portion of its schedule until October 13 against the Islanders.
The Oilers also enter tonight's game on a winning note after knocking off the San Jose Sharks, 3-2, on Thursday in a shootout. Jarret Stoll's goal in the fourth round of the shootout clinched the victory.
After Edmonton's Dwayne Roloson stoned Patrick Marleau to start the round, Stoll skated in, put a fake on Sharks netminder Evgeni Nabokov, and drilled a forehander off the right post for the game-winner.
Kyle Brodziak and Tom Gilbert lit the lamp in regulation for the Oilers, who got 28 saves in regulation from Roloson. Edmonton continues to play without forwards Ethan Moreau (foot) and Fernando Pisani (ulcerative colitis), who are both on injured reserve.
The game will mark the second straight at home for Edmonton, which hits the road to play in Detroit on Monday.
The Oilers are 3-0-1 (one tie) in the last four meetings with the Philly, but the Flyers are 3-0-2 in their last five trips to Edmonton. These clubs haven't met since an Oilers victory on December 8, 2005 and the Flyers were last at Rexall Place on October 10, 2002, when the teams skated to a tie.
