Columbus, OH (My Sportsbook) - Japan and Germany will square off in a Group C first-round matchup at Crew Stadium on Wednesday with the winner, all but assured a place in the quarterfinals.
Japan coasted to a 6-0 victory over Argentina on Saturday as Mio Otani became the second Asian player to record a hat trick in a World Cup match. China's Sun Wen did so against Ghana in 1999.
Otani became the 10th player in Women's World Cup history to record a hat trick and the fastest to do so as she scored all three in an eight-minute span.
"All of the goals were great," Otani said. "And I was thrilled to help my team win."
Meanwhile, Germany rebounded after a disappointing first half to roll over Canada, 4-1 on Saturday.
The score was knotted at one at halftime and German star Birgit Prinz admitted that coach Tina Theune-Meyer ripped into her players during the intermission.
"She said we had to finish much better and not compromise on defense and offense," Prinz said.
The Germans responded to the talk, but trail Japan by two in goal differential.
Despite Japan's huge win, head coach Eiji Ueda says its a thing of the past.
"We played well, but we are not satisfied with just the result and we want to concentrate on something more," Ueda said.
The match could come down to the goalkeepers as both countries are capable of firing shots at will.
Germany has a 10-5-2 record in three World Cup appearances, while Japan has played in all four events and is just 2-8-1 overall.
