Miami, FL (My Sportsbook) - Bruno Junqueira won the provisional pole for Sunday's Champ Car event, the Grand Prix Americas on the streets of Miami. The No.1 Newman/Haas driver circled the tight 1.15-mile temporary street course in 45.024 seconds (91.951 m.p.h.), more than one half second faster than his closest rival. Junqueira earned one championship point for the provisional pole and a guaranteed front row starting position for the race. With four events remaining in the 2003 season, series points leader Paul Tracy owns a 17-point edge over Junqueira (204-187). Mika Salo (45.686), rookie Sebastien Bourdais (45.770), Michael Jourdain Jr. (46.033) and Adrian Fernandez (46.306) completed the top-five. Tracy was just the 14th-fastest qualifier in the 19-car field. As with the last race on the tight Denver course, CART officials changed the qualifying session's procedures so that each car would run three timed laps without anyone else on the track. There have been a number of races this year in which competitors claimed that other drivers were intentionally blocking qualifying runs by slowing on the course. The final qualifying session is set for Saturday at 1:15 p.m. (et) with the race scheduled to begin on Sunday at 1 p.m.(et).
