Miami, FL (My Sportsbook) - Adrian Fernandez captured the pole for Sunday's Grand Prix Americas CART race on the streets of Miami. The No.51 Lola/Ford driver completed his best lap in 44.253 seconds (93.553 m.p.h.). The pole victory was Fernandez's first of the season and fourth of his Champ Car career. Fernandez won two poles in 2002, at Milwaukee and Monterrey. Starting on the front row with Fernandez is provisional pole winner Bruno Junqueira. The Newman/Haas Racing driver could not keep the top spot after crashing on his third and final lap in turn 4. The Brazilian was not injured in the accident. Oriol Servia and rookie Sebastien Bourdais will start in row two, with series points leader Paul Tracy starting fifth. With four events remaining in the 2003 season, Tracy owns a 17-point edge over Junqueira (204-187). As with the last race on the tight Denver course, CART officials changed the qualifying session's procedures so that each car would run three timed laps without anyone else on the track. There have been a number of races this year in which competitors claimed that other drivers were intentionally blocking qualifying runs by slowing on the course. The race is scheduled to begin on Sunday at 1 p.m. (et).
