Miami, FL (My Sportsbook) - Mario Dominguez captured the Grand Prix Americas Champ Car race held on the streets of Miami. The Herdez Competition driver crossed the finish line 5.241 seconds ahead of teammate Roberto Moreno.
The young rookie driver benefited from a number of incidents involving front- running cars, including a late-race accident between leaders Adrian Fernandez and Bruno Junqueira, to collect his first win of the season and second of his CART career. Only 10 of the 19 cars finished the race.
The five top drivers on the starting grid all suffered accidents during the race. Besides pole-winner Fernandez and front-row starter Junqueira, Oriol Servia, series points leader Paul Tracy and Sebastien Bourdais all failed to finish the race due to contact.
Servia, who started third, crashed into a wall on the 44th lap. Tracy and Bourdais had their day end on lap 69.
"My car was not handling well out there," Tracy said. "Bourdais had been trying to get by for a while. He made a pass and I was just trying to get it back, but I was not close enough. It was his corner. It's my fault."
Fernandez and Junqueira were knocked out of the race on lap 97 as they were trying to pass the slower lapped car of Tiago Monteiro. Junqueira locked his brakes, slid into Fernandez and sent them both skidding into the corner.
Mika Salo, Jimmy Vasser and Mario Haberfeld completed the top-five.
Tracy maintained the championship lead, but it was sliced from 17 to 13 points with just three races remaining in the 2003 season.
The next race in the championship, the Gran Premio Telmex from Mexico City, is scheduled for Sunday, October 12th.
