(My Sportsbook) - The
Calgary Flames entered Thursday's contest at the Saddledome with the
Buffalo Sabres winless in their first five games at home, despite holding a lead in four of those matchups.
Well thanks to a fine effort by goaltender Roman Turek, and a couple of lucky bounces, the Flames removed the donut from their home record and reached the .500 mark overall (3-3-2-2).
"That's the Roman Turek that we know," Flames coach Greg Gilbert said after the game. "He was outstanding tonight."
Turek was sensational between the pipes for the Flames, stopping 30 shots for the 21st blanking of his career. Calgary improved its mark on home ice to 1-2-2-1.
"He was great for them tonight," Sabres winger Jochen Hecht said. "He made some good saves and pretty much kept all the rebounds to himself."
No save was any bigger then the one that came early in the second period when he sprawled out to make an acrobatic stop on Hecht off a rebound.
"Roman had some very timely saves," Flames forward Jarome Iginla said. "We've always got a lot of confidence in him back there but you can tell on some nights that he's going to be unbeatable and that's a great feeling."
Iginla, who has struggled after leading the league in goals and points a year ago, opened the scoring just 27 seconds into the game with his third goal of the year -- his first at even strength. He was cruising through the slot and deflected Toni Lydman's right point shot past Buffalo netminder Martin Biron.
"Jarome's been working his backside off and things are going to start going in for him," Gilbert added.
Lydman made it a 2-0 game later in the stanza when he banked a shot off of Buffalo defenseman Rhett Warrener into the net.
"I just fired it at the net," Lydman said. "Especially the goal I got, I was shooting way too high and it hit their stick and went in."
Chris Drury scored a shorthanded goal with 2:37 left in the second to provide the final margin. He took a breakout feed from Stephane Yelle and skated into the Buffalo zone. Biron stopped Drury's initial backhand attempt, but the puck dropped in the crease and Drury was able to poke it in for his fourth goal of the season
"We did get bounces tonight," Iginla added, "and I tell ya, it felt good."
WHAT'S NEXT
The Flames will hope to raise their home mark on Saturday against the Colorado Avalanche before embarking on a five-game road trip, where they will face the Islanders, Devils, Rangers, Panthers and Thrashers.
