Arlington, TX (My Sportsbook) - The Texas Rangers fired manager Jerry Narron on Tuesday. The club struggled to its third straight last-place finish in the AL West, posting a 72-90 mark. Team general manager John Hart made the decision after two days of meetings with owner Tom Hicks and assistant general manager Grady Fuson. "This has been a very difficult decision because I like and respect Jerry Narron," said Hart. "But we have to make some tough decisions now. Our fans deserve better than the record and performance of the 2002 Texas Rangers." Narron was appointed as the team's 15th full-time manager on May 4, 2001 after Johnny Oates stepped down following an 11-17 start. Narron's overall record with the Rangers was 134-162. On June 2, 2001, he signed a two-year contract extension through 2003. Hart also said that the new manager will be involved in the makeup of the 2003 coaching staff. "This season has certainly been very frustrating and painful for all of us," Hart added. "Injuries have obviously played a major factor but there are a number of areas in which we need to change and improve. Our fans deserve to have the Rangers contend every year, and I am committed to putting this organization in a position to do that."
