Coral Springs, FL (My Sportsbook) - Rick Rhoden, who pitched for four major-league
baseball teams, aced the par-three 17th Wednesday and that helped him take a two-stroke lead after 36 holes of the Champions Tour National Qualifying Tournament TPC at Eagle Trace.
Rhoden shot two-under 70 in round two and he completed two rounds at six- under-par 138.
Scott Masingill, who shared the first-round lead with Rhoden, and Mark Balen are two shots back at minus-four. Balen fired the low round of the tournament with his five-under 67 on Wednesday.
Rick Karbowski, Ron Schroeder, Pat Laverty and Jack Ferenz all posted rounds of two-under 70 and they are tied for fourth at three-under-par 141.
Rhoden got going with a birdie on the second, but he gave that stroke right back as he bogeyed No. 3. He repeated that sequence at six and seven, and trailed Masingill.
Masingill birdied the fifth and sixth to jump to minus-six. He tumbled back to minus-three with bogeys at seven, nine and 11.
Rhoden tripped to another bogey at 12 that left him at minus-three. Masingill birdied the same hole to move to four-under and a share of the lead with Balen.
Balen started on the back nine with a bogey at 11. He ran off three birdies in a four-hole stretch from the 13th to climb to minus-one. Around the turn, he birdied the first. Later, Balen birdied his last two holes to get in at minus- four.
Rhoden and Masingill both birdied the par-four 14th. The 17th proved to be the big turning point. Rhoden's hole-in-one jumped him to minus-six, two clear of Balen.
Masingill stumbled to a bogey at the 17th to slip to minus-four.
Steve Thomas fired a four-under 68 Wednesday to jump from a tie for 41st into a share of eighth at two-under-par 142. He was joined there by John Ross, Mike San Filippo, Bruce Zabriski, Mike Goodes, Jim Razzeto, Craig Marseilles, Chris Dachisen and Thomas E. Jones.
