Denver, CO (My Sportsbook) - Jim Cummins' first goal in over two years proved to be the game winner, as the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Calgary Flames, 4-2, on Patrick Roy night at the Pepsi Center.

Roy's No. 33 jersey was raised to the rafters just months after announcing his retirement following the conclusion of last season. Roy helped the Avalanche to two Stanley Cup championships and has an NHL-record 551 victories, four Stanley Cup championships, three Conn Smythe trophies and three Vezina trophies during his illustrious career.

Milan Hejduk and Adam Foote each scored power-play goals for the Avalanche, who have won three of their last four. Rob Blake added an empty-netter and David Aebischer made 26 saves in the victory.

Martin Gelinas scored both goals for the Flames, who have lost three of their last five games. Jamie McLennan stopped just 15 shots to fall to 4-2 on the year.

The Avalanche scored a pair of first period power-play goals to grab a two- goal lead after 20 minutes of play.

Hejduk scored the game's first goal when he stationed himself in front and took a great pass from behind the net by Peter Forsberg. Hejduk's shot was partially stopped by McLennan, but it still trickled over the goal line for a 1-0 lead 8:25 into the contest.

Foote doubled the Avalanche's advantage when he fired a shot from the point that deflected off a Calgary defender's stick and into the net. His second goal of the season with 5:21 left in the opening period went over the right shoulder of McLennan.

The Flames cut the deficit in half with a power-play goal of their own at 3:36 of the second period. Gelinas streaked down the left wing on a 3-on-2 and took a pass from Chuck Kobasew. Gelinas re-directed the puck inside the left post to make it a 2-1 game.

Colorado, though, got a very important goal from its fourth line to re-claim a two-goal lead. Cummins produced the tally when he settled the puck in front of the net and powered it through McLennan with 7:45 remaining in the middle period. Charlie Stephens and Travis Brigley both assisted on Cummins' goal to record their first career NHL point.

Gelinas scored his second goal with the man advantage just 32 seconds into the final period. He reduced the deficit to 3-2 when he slammed the puck into the empty net on a rebound following a scramble in front of the Colorado goal.

The Flames' best chance to tie the game came on Jarome Iginla's shot from the slot with just over eight minutes left to play. Aebischer, though, made a great save with his left pad to deny Iginla of the goal.

Blake closed out the contest with an empty-netter with 30 seconds to go in the contest.

Roy joined Ray Bourque as the only other Colorado player to have his number retired.
