Thrashers battle Caps trying to extend win streak

(My Sportsbook) - The surging Atlanta Thrashers will aim for their fourth straight victory tonight, when they visit the Washington Capitals at the Verizon Center.

The Thrashers are 10-4-0 since firing head coach Bob Hartley after the team began the season with six straight losses. Atlanta's general manager Don Waddell has done an excellent job at handing the coaching duties on an interim basis and has now led the Thrashers to wins in six of their last seven games.

Atlanta's most recent victory came in dramatic fashion against the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday. Todd White capped a furious Atlanta comeback with a power-play goal less than three minutes into the overtime period to give the Thrashers the 4-3 victory at Philips Arena.

Tampa Bay had led 3-1 with as few as six minutes remaining in regulation, but Bryan Little and Ilya Kovalchuk each scored to tie it, and then White turned a Lightning turnover into the game-winner when he beat Johan Holmqvist at the 2:49 mark of the extra session.

Kovalchuk is leading the NHL with 17 goals this season and has posted 11 of those markers in his last eight games.

Marian Hossa assisted on both third-period scores, Brad Larsen also notched a goal and Johan Hedberg made 17 saves to earn the victory for Atlanta, which is at .500 for the first time this season with a 10-10-0 mark.

The Capitals, meanwhile, have dropped four straight and eight of their last nine contests. Washington began the season with three straight wins, but is just 3-13-1 since.

Washington hosted Florida on Monday and was dealt a 4-3 loss by the Panthers. Olli Jokinen scored two goals, including the eventual game-winner, as the Panthers held on to beat the Caps at the Verizon Center.

Chris Clark, Brooks Laich, and Alexander Semin all scored for the Capitals. Alexander Ovechkin had an assist, and Olaf Kolzig stopped 22 shots.

Semin was back in the lineup after missing the previous nine contests with an ankle injury.

Washington is just 2-6-0 as the home team this season, while the Thrashers are 6-6-0 as the visiting team.

The Capitals and Thrashers have split a pair of meetings this season, but tonight's test is the first encounter this year in D.C. Washington has won four of six matchups overall, but Atlanta has notched four wins in its last six stops in the nation's capital.
