Brodeur, Devils blank Thrashers

Atlanta, GA (My Sportsbook) - Martin Brodeur made 22 stops for his first shutout of the season as the New Jersey Devils blanked the Atlanta Thrashers, 3-0, at Philips Arena.

Rod Pelley, Paul Martin and Jay Pandolfo each scored a goal while Jamie Langenbrunner had three assists for the Devils, who have won the first three games of a four-game road trip.

Brodeur, who finished last season with a career-high 12 shutouts, now has 93 shutouts in his career.

"It's nice, I think every year you try to get some shutout," said Brodeur. "I think when you do that it means you've won. It means you do well. Everything improves when you do a shutout. For me to get one is exciting. I've seen a lot of goalies have a lot of shutouts this year, so I was just trying to join the parade and try to get to them a little bit."

Johan Hedberg allowed two goals on 26 shots for the Thrashers, who had a four- game winning streak stopped.

"He played well," said Atlanta forward Bobby Holik about Brodeur. "We didn't come close to testing him. Not enough traffic. We gave him a great opportunity to be good. We just didn't do enough to score on him. We just didn't have our best game and they played typical Devils hockey. They played very patiently, waited for us to turn the puck over and relied on Marty."

It was a tight first period as neither side was able to get on the scoreboard. Brodeur stopped eight shots in the frame while Hedberg made seven saves.

The Devils scored twice in the second period to grab the lead.

Pelley grabbed the puck behind the net and skated to the right side. From a sharp angle he threw a shot on net that squeezed past Hedberg at the 8:59 mark.

Then, on the power play, Brian Gionta and Martin played catch with the puck and Gionta sent the last pass from the low left circle to the top of the circle where Martin's one-timer beat a screened Hedberg with 3:36 left in the period.

Brodeur made six saves in the period, including a nice stop of an Ilya Kovalchuk slap shot towards the end of the frame, to keep the Thrashers off the board.

The best stop of the game for Brodeur came when he made a sprawling left pad save off a Pascal Dupuis backhander on the breakaway with around nine minutes to play.

Pandolfo added an empty-net goal with 27.6 remaining to seal the win.
