(My Sportsbook) - The Pittsburgh Penguins will try for their first winning streak in over a month when they host the
Atlanta Thrashers tonight at Mellon Arena.
The Penguins defeated the Ottawa Senators, 6-5, in a shootout on Thursday to halt a two game-losing streak while winning for just the third time in nine games (3-5-1). Pittsburgh hasn't won consecutive games since a three-game winning burst from October 19-23.
Jarkko Ruutu's goal in the fifth round of the shootout capped a late two-goal rally on Thursday, as he skated in on Senators goaltender Martin Gerber and made a quick fake to the forehand before moving to the backhand and slipping the puck through Gerber's pads.
Ryan Malone tallied twice, while Sergei Gonchar, Evgeni Malkin and Tyler Kennedy also scored for the Penguins. Malkin's goal extended his points streak to 15 games, the longest current run in the NHL. He has seven goals and 15 assists during the streak.
Starting netminder Marc-Andre Fleury allowed two goals on only four shots before being yanked midway through the first period. Dany Sabourin stopped 29- of-32 shots and stood tall in the shootout to pick up the win.
The Penguins are 4-6-2 at home this year and tonight play the first of two straight games at Mellon Arena. The club hosts Dallas on Friday.
The Thrashers, meanwhile, will try to rebound after having a four-game winning streak stopped on Friday. Martin Brodeur made 22 stops for his first shutout of the season as the New Jersey Devils blanked Atlanta, 3-0, at Philips Arena.
Johan Hedberg allowed two goals on 26 shots for the Thrashers. Marian Hossa had a six-game points streak (6 goals, 7 assists) halted in the blanking.
Atlanta will play three of its next four games on the road, where it is 7-6-0.
Tonight will be the first meeting of the season between the Penguins and Thrashers after the two teams split four matchups last year. Atlanta has won five of the last seven, though, and has scored four or more goals in eight of the last 11 meetings.
