(My Sportsbook) - Add another name to the ever-growing list of walking wounded Chicago Blackhawks, as goaltender Jocelyn Thibault was sent back to Chicago for an MRI on his hip prior to the team's 3-0 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.
"He felt a twitch," assistant general manager Dale Tallon told the Chicago Sun-Times. "He doesn't know how he got it. We think it may have come in the game on Friday."
In Friday's 2-1 win over Nashville, Thibault showed no signs of an injury, as he stopped 31-of-32 shots to improve to 5-3-2 on the year, while lowering his goals-against-average to 2.27 and dropping his save-percentage to .933.
"I can't believe he hurt it in the game," general manager Bob Pulford said. "[Trainer Mike Gapski] said it flared up at the [Sunday] morning practice. He was limping, and it was clicking on him. We think it might be cartilage, but then again, it might be nothing."
Thibault, who joins injured stars Eric Daze and Alexei Zhamnov on the sidelines, has had a history of wearing down as the season goes on. Last year he missed the final nine games of the season after suffering a concussion.
The results from Monday's MRI were not known yet and it was unclear on whether or not Thibault would be available for Wednesday's contest against the Calgary Flames.
If Thibault cannot go, Craig Anderson, the 22-year-old-homegrown talent would serve as Michael Leighton's backup. Anderson was recalled from Norfolk of the AHL on Monday. He and Leighton battled for the backup job in training camp and were supposed to switch spots between the Hawks and Admirals every 20 games, allowing both the chance for NHL experience as well as steady action in the minors.
Also on the injury front defenseman Alexander Karpovtsev missed his third straight game on Monday with what Sutter called a "stiff upper body".
"He's had it for a while," Sutter told the paper. "He'll be sore for a while. He's always going to be hurt. He'll have to work himself through it, and we'll have to manage it. He's pretty important to the team."
Karpovtsev, who missed 41 of the Blackhawks' 82 games last season with a variety of injuries, is one of the Hawks' most experienced blueliners and plays a significant role on the club's special teams units.
