Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - The
Philadelphia Flyers will try and push their winning streak to five this evening when they welcome the Washington Capitals to the First Union Center in the second meeting of the season between the two teams.
Back on October 19, Philadelphia topped the Capitals, 3-1, and has beaten Washington five straight times.
The Flyers, who have posted a 4-0-1 mark on their home ice, enter Saturday's tilt on the heels of a 6-2 drubbing of the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday.
Michal Handzus and Jeremy Roenick each collected a goal and an assist to lead the Philadelphia onslaught. Handzus' tally was the fifth in his last four games.
John LeClair added an assist and is still one goal short of 300 while in a Flyers' sweater. Also on the milestone watch is Simon Gagne, who is two helpers short of 100 for his career.
Robert Esche, who got the call in net to give Roman Cechmanek a rest, made 18 saves to earn the victory for the Flyers, who have started the season with a sparkling 7-1-2 record thanks to an NHL-second-best 40 goals. Only the Tampa Bay Lightning (41) have lit the lamp more than Philadelphia.
Meanwhile, the Flyers have held their opponents to two goals or less eight times this season.
Philadelphia trailed 2-1 early in the second period, but scored five unanswered goals to earn the victory. The Flyers scored six goals for the third time in four games are unbeaten in their first five home games for the first time since the 1995-96 season.
Washington put the brakes on a four-game winless streak on Friday with a 3-2 victory over the upstart Lightning.
Peter Bondra scored on a two-man advantage with 1:12 remaining in the third period to lift the Capitals to the win, while Robert Lang had a goal and an assist and Sergei Gonchar added three helpers.
Sebastien Charpentier made 16 saves for Washington, which acquired veteran center Michael Nylander from Chicago along with a pair of draft picks on Friday for center Andrei Nikolishin and left wing Chris Simon.
Brad Lukowich was whistled for a tripping penalty with 3:02 left and Pavel Kubina was called for holding just 19 seconds before Bondra's goal. The puck came out to Dainius Zubrus in the low slot and instead of shooting he dropped the puck back to Gonchar at the right point. The defenseman then sent a pass into the lower part of the right circle for Bondra, who ripped a one-time shot just inside the right post.
The Capitals have struggled in the City of Brotherly Love, where they are winless in their last 11 (0-10-1) and are just 1-11-1 in the last 13.
