St. Paul, MN (My Sportsbook) - The NHL's best team hopes to conclude a three-game undefeated homestand tonight when the Minnesota Wild host the
Vancouver Canucks at Xcel Energy Center.
Minnesota, which at 18 points sits five points ahead of Colorado in the Northwest, has won two straight, is undefeated in its last six (4-0-2) and is coming off a 2-1 overtime victory over the San Jose Sharks on Thursday to run their home mark to 6-1-0.
Sergei Zholtok scored both goals, including the game-winner with just 10 seconds remaining in overtime, to lead Minnesota to the win in its third straight overtime game (2-0-1) and fifth of the season (3-0-2).
The Wild earned a faceoff in the right circle with 15 seconds remaining and worked the puck back to the point. Willie Mitchell swung a pass to the left point to Brad Bombardir, who wristed the puck toward the net. After glancing off a skate, the puck found its way to a wide-open Zholtok at the right side of the net, and he wristed the shot past Evgeni Nabokov for the victory.
Dwayne Roloson started in net in place of Manny Fernandez and turned aside 19 of the 20 shots he faced to earn the win, Minnesota's third in overtime this season. The Wild, who are off to their best start in franchise history (8-2-1), allowed just one goal for the fifth time this season.
Fernandez, who leads the league with a 1.48 GAA and a .949 save percentage, is one victory shy of 50 for his NHL career.
Bombardir collected assists on both of Zholtok's goals.
Vancouver enters Saturday's tilt winless in its last four, including a 5-1 setback to the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday.
Dan Cloutier allowed three goals on just 10 shots before being pulled in favor of Peter Skudra in the second. Skudra made just eight saves in relief for the Canucks, who have won just once in their last nine games (1-4-4) after starting the season with two straight wins.
The Canucks got an even-strength goal from Bryan Allen, but continue to struggle with the man-advantage. Vancouver went scoreless on six power-play opportunities, and has scored just two goals in its last 44 chances over a seven-game span.
The loss dropped Vancouver below the .500 mark (3-4-4-0) for the first time since January 23, 2002 -- a span of 40 games.
Vancouver has won two straight after losing the last two meetings. The Canucks are also 3-2-1 in the last six meetings and 5-3-1 in the last nine.
