Pittsburgh, PA (My Sportsbook) - Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves for his second shutout of the season as the Pittsburgh Penguins trounced the
Atlanta Thrashers, 5-0, at Mellon Arena.
Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist while Sergei Gonchar added three helpers for the Penguins, who have won two straight after dropping six of seven.
"We are young," said Gonchar. "It's nice to get a couple of wins and get our confidence back. Hopefully we can build on top of it and it will continue for us."
Ondrej Pavelec gave up all five goals on 34 shots for the Thrashers, who have suffered consecutive shutout losses after a four-game winning streak.
"I think we have to stick together," said Atlanta forward Todd White. "We have to realize the mistakes we've been making and what teams are doing. There's adjustments to make and we must make those adjustments."
Pittsburgh scored three times in the opening stanza to take a 3-0 lead.
The first goal came just 3:38 in as Jordan Staal jammed in a loose puck in front of the net.
The Penguins then used the power play to get the second goal as Gonchar snapped a shot from the left point that was stopped, but Ryan Malone swept in the rebound from in front with 8:07 left in the first.
With 4:51 left in the first, Crosby's shot from the right circle was stopped by Pavelec, but Colby Armstrong tipped in the rebound for his second goal of the year.
On the power play in the second, Crosby's one-timer from the top of the right circle whizzed past a screened Pavelec at the 8:59 mark for a 4-0 lead.
Ryan Whitney capped the scoring in the game as his slap shot from the high slot just barely trickled over the goalline at the 5:01 mark of the third to complete the scoring.
