(My Sportsbook) - The
New Jersey Devils will try to extend their season-high winning streak this evening when they host the
Atlanta Thrashers at the Prudential Center.
The Devils have ripped off six straight victories for their longest winning burst since closing the 2005-06 season with 11 consecutive wins. The winning run has rocketed the third-place Devils to just four points back of the Atlantic Division-leading New York Rangers.
New Jersey extended its run on Friday with a 4-0 victory over Montreal. Martin Brodeur made 27 saves for his second shutout of the season. It was also his 94th career shutout, tying him with George Hainsworth for second place on the all-time list.
Brodeur is now nine shutouts shy of matching Terry Sawchuk's all-time mark of 103. However, Brodeur's blanking of the Canadiens on Friday did match him with Sawchuk for most combined shutouts (116) in NHL history, including the playoffs.
Zach Parise picked up his first-career hat trick in the win over Montreal and added an assist for a four-point night. Brian Gionta notched a goal and an assist to run his points streak to six games. He has five goals and five assists in that span and has lit the lamp in three straight games.
Jamie Langenbrunner added two assists and has nine helpers during a five-game assists streak.
Jay Pandolfo was scratched due to a lower back injury, ending his streak of 307 consecutive games played. He is day-to-day with the ailment and is questionable for tonight.
New Jersey's last two wins have come in the beginning of a five-game homestand. The Devils, who are 5-4-0 as the host this year, will also welcome Boston and Washington to the Prudential Center during the residency.
The Thrashers also enter this contest on the heels of an outstanding goaltending performance. Playing for the first time in six weeks due to a groin injury, Kari Lehtonen returned for Atlanta and turned aside all 33 shots faced in a 4-0 win over the New York Islanders.
Lehtonen picked up his first shutout of the season, and the eighth of his career. He lost his first four decisions of the season -- including a 6-5 setback to the Devils on October 13 -- and eventually landed on injured reserve due to the groin ailment.
Ilya Kovalchuk scored his league-leading 21st goal of the season only 34 seconds into the game and added an assist for Atlanta. His 36 points on the season are tied for second in the NHL.
Eric Boulton, Marian Hossa and Slava Kozlov all scored first-period goals for the Thrashers, who halted a three-game losing streak.
Atlanta has won five of its last six on the road and plays the second of back- to-back road tilts tonight. The Thrashers are 8-7-0 as the visiting team and next returns home to host both New York clubs.
The Devils have won both of their meetings with the Thrashers this year by a combined margin of 9-5, with both wins coming in Atlanta. The Thrashers, though, have still won seven of the last 10 in the series overall, and four of the last five on the road against New Jersey.
