(My Sportsbook) - The
New York Islanders will try to halt their longest losing streak of the season tonight, when they visit the struggling
Atlanta Thrashers at Philips Arena.
The Islanders have dropped three straight games for the first time this season and the last two setbacks came on home ice. New York, which is just 4-6-0 away from Long Island this year, will begin a four-game road trip this evening.
The Isles' latest setback came Monday evening against the visiting Boston Bruins, a team that rarely wins at Nassau Coliseum. Tim Thomas turned aside 33 shots as the Bruins beat New York, 3-1, ending a 10-game road winless streak against the Isles. It was Boston's first victory on Long Island since a 4-2 decision on December 22, 2001.
Rick DiPietro made 19 saves for New York, which was coming off a 4-0 loss to Atlanta on Saturday night and nearly endured back-to-back shutouts before Chris Campoli broke the streak with a late third-period tally.
The Isles are last in the Eastern Conference with 57 goals and have failed to score more than two goals in a non-shootout game since November 6, a span of 13 games.
Meanwhile, the Thrashers have dropped four of their last five games (1-3-1) and are coming off Sunday's close loss in New Jersey. Brian Gionta scored the lone goal of the shootout as the Devils clipped Atlanta, 3-2, at the Prudential Center.
Gionta, shooting second for the Devils, lifted a backhander under the crossbar and beyond the diving Johan Hedberg. Martin Brodeur, who foiled Slava Kozlov and Marian Hossa on successive tries, sealed the win by out-waiting Ilya Kovalchuk and grabbing his weak flip from the left side with his glove.
Kovalchuk notched his league-leading 22nd goal and Todd White also lit the lamp for the Thrashers, who had won four straight games before their current funk.
Hedberg took the loss despite a 34-save performance. The Swedish netminder carried a 6-0 lifetime record in the shootout round prior to Sunday.
The Thrashers, who are just 4-6-0 as the host this year, begin a brief two- game homestand tonight. They will also welcome the New York Rangers on Friday.
Atlanta beat the Islanders last Saturday in New York and has taken three of five and four of the last seven meetings between the clubs.
