St. Louis Blues will be trying for their eighth straight win on Sunday when they head to New York to battle the Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
Scott Mellanby and Cory Stillman each registered a goal and an assist and Pavol Demitra added three assists to lead St. Louis to a 6-1 win over the New York Islanders on Saturday.
Dallas Drake, Martin Rucinsky, Eric Boguniecki and Bryce Salvador also scored for the Blues, who are unbeaten in their last eight (7-0-1). Fred Brathwaite stopped 19 shots for St. Louis, which will wrap up a three-game road swing on Tuesday in Montreal.
Doug Weight had two assists for the Blues, who have scored at least two goals in their first nine games and have outscored their opponents 38-16 on the season. Weight has 12 points (4g, 8a) in his last six games.
Al MacInnis also posted an assist and has nine points (2g, 7a) in his last six games, as does Stillman, who has registered four goals and five assists in his last six games.
St. Louis finished 2-for-7 on the power-play and has recorded 14 power-play goals in its last six contests. Seven of its last 17 goals have been scored with the man advantage.
The seven straight wins is the longest winning streak since the team took a franchise-record 10 straight in January of last year.
On the other end of the spectrum are the Rangers, who fell for the second straight game on Saturday, 3-2, to the Boston Bruins.
Rem Murray and Mark Messier scored for the Rangers, who blew a two-goal third period lead. Dan Blackburn spelled usual starter Mike Richter and stopped 30 shots for New York.
Messier played in his 1,615th career NHL game last night, tying Larry Murphy for second on the all-time list. He should move into sole possession of second place tonight. Gordie Howe holds the record of 1,767.
Eric Lindros was held off the scoresheet but has recorded 22 points (12g, 10a) in 14 career matches against the Blues.
New York was 0-4 on the power-play and is a miserable 1-for-26 over the last six games.
The Rangers are 2-4-1-0 at home this season and will open a three-game stand tonight that will also include visits from Edmonton and Calgary.
St. Louis has won two straight against the Blueshirts and three consecutive games at MSG.
