Atlanta, GA (My Sportsbook) - Slava Kozlov scored the game-winning goal with 5:17 to play as the
Atlanta Thrashers downed the
New York Rangers, 4-2, at Philips Arena.
Kozlov also added an assist while Pascal Dupuis, Eric Boulton and Marian Hossa also scored for the Thrashers, who have won three of their last four games.
Johan Hedberg stopped 30 shots in the victory for Atlanta, which has won five straight against New York.
"We didn't play great hockey in the first period," said Kozlov. "We played a little in the second and a solid third period. Hedberg played solid hockey and he gave us a chance to win."
Marcel Hossa and Chris Drury each scored a goal while Stephen Valiquette stopped 18 shots for the slumping Rangers, who have dropped five of their last seven games.
Atlanta grabbed the lead as Kozlov skated into the Rangers end and blasted a slap shot from the left circle that beat Valiquette on the short side with 5:17 to play.
"I didn't see it," said Valiquette about the goal. "I thought it went off of something. Cause usually when you get surprised by a shot sometimes it does. But he just ripped it. I thought I was in position and focused, but I just got beat by it."
New York pulled its goaltender in the final minute of play, but Marian Hossa's empty-netter in the final moments sealed the win.
The Thrashers got the first goal of the game just 2:15 in as, on the rush, Jim Slater cranked a slap shot from the right circle that Valiquette saved, but he let up a huge rebound and Boulton slammed it home from down low.
However, the Rangers scored the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
Less than two minutes after the Boulton goal, New York tied the game as Scott Gomez won a puck battle along the boards and from the right corner sent it to Marcel Hossa, who one-timed it from the right circle past Hedberg.
At the 6:32 mark of the frame, New York grabbed the lead as a Drury knocked in a rebound off of Petr Prucha shot for his 200th career goal.
Atlanta got the only goal of the second period to tie the contest. On a 3-on-2 rush, Slater dished the puck from the right circle to Kozlov at the low left side. Kozlov held the disc for a moment before sending it across the goalmouth to Dupuis, who knocked the high pass out of the air and tapped it into the net 5:58 in.
