(My Sportsbook) - The
New Jersey Devils will attempt to stretch their current winning streak to 10 games this evening when they visit New York and Madison Square Garden to battle the struggling Rangers.
New Jersey won its ninth consecutive game on Friday, topping Washington 3-2. It is the Devils' longest winning burst since closing out the 2005-06 season with 11 straight wins.
Martin Brodeur made 22 saves on Scott Stevens night, while Vitaly Vishnevski, Dainius Zubrus and Travis Zajac each scored a goal for the Devils. New Jersey now has sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Division, two points up on both the Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers.
New Jersey honored recent Hall of Fame inductee Stevens during a pre-game ceremony. Stevens, who had his No. 4 sweater retired by the Devils on February 3, 2006, entered the Hockey Hall of Fame on November 12 along with NHL greats Ron Francis, Al MacInnis, and Mark Messier.
New Jersey's Jay Pandolfo missed Friday's game and is also expected to sit out this one due to a pelvis/abdomen injury.
The Devils haven't lost since November 16 against the Islanders and have also tasted victory in five straight road games. The club is 8-6-2 away from Newark this season.
With New Jersey streaking, the Rangers will hope to end a three-game slide tonight. New York's latest setback came on Friday, a 4-2 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers.
Marcel Hossa and Chris Drury each scored a goal while Stephen Valiquette stopped 18 shots for the slumping Rangers, who have dropped five of their last seven games. Drury's goals was the 200th of his career.
Henrik Lundqvist should return to net tonight for the Rangers. Lundqvist remains one of the best goaltenders in the league, but the Swede has dropped his last two starts and was chased early from a setback against Toronto on Thursday. He has allowed four goals in each of his last two games.
However, Lundqvist has posted an 0.97 goals-against average and one shutout to go along with a 3-0-0 record versus the Devils this season. Former Devil Scott Gomez, who leads New York with 22 points (5 goals, 17 assists) after signing as a free agent this offseason, has one goal and two assists in three games against New Jersey this year.
New York will play three of its next four games in the Big Apple, and is 9-6-0 at home this season.
The Rangers have bested the Devils in their three meetings so far this year, with two of those wins coming in New York. The Blueshirts are 7-2-1 in the last 10 games against the Devils at Madison Square Garden.
