Uniondale, NY (My Sportsbook) - The
New York Islanders will hope to put the brakes on a four-game losing streak tonight when they welcome the
Calgary Flames to the Nassau Coliseum.
The Islanders saw their captain Michael Peca return early from reconstructive left knee surgery on Saturday, but failed to carry the early momentum, as they were mauled 6-1 by the surging St. Louis Blues.
Jason Blake scored the lone goal for New York, which has dropped five of its last six (1-5-0). Garth Snow registered 26 saves for the Islanders, who have dropped three straight at home.
Peca, who was not expected back before December, took the opening faceoff and stayed on the ice for 27 seconds in his only shift of the game. It was his first action since getting low-cut by Toronto's Darcy Tucker in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.
Roman Hamrlik has enjoyed success versus the Flames and has recorded 17 points (4g, 13a) in 25 games.
Calgary enters Monday's tilt with a modest two-game unbeaten string (1-0-1), which has gotten the team to the .500 mark.
On Saturday the Flames skated to a 4-4 tie with the Colorado Avalanche.
Martin Gelinas scored his second goal of the game with 6:02 remaining in the third period to help Calgary earn the deadlock. Gelinas also added an assist for the Flames, who have picked up at least one point in five straight games (1-0-2-2).
Gelinas scored his sixth goal of the season to tie it. He made his way to the front of the crease and deflected a high shot by Robyn Regehr down and past Patrick Roy, who argued for a high stick. The play was reviewed and the goal stood.
An entertaining overtime featured nine shots and one power play.
Jarome Iginla was stopped by Roy on a breakaway midway through the extra period and had a pair of blasts from the left circle stopped by the netminder during a Calgary power play.
Jamie McLennan made 26 saves for Calgary. He turned aside four shots in the extra period. McLennan will now assume the starting goaltender duties for a while after usual No. 1 Roman Turek was placed on injured reserve because of a broken finger on his catching hand.
The Flames, who will begin a five-game road trip tonight, have won four straight and five of their last six on Long Island.
In 98 lifetime games against Calgary, the Islanders own a record of 39-39-20-0. When playing at Nassau Coliseum, the team is 25-15-9-0.
