Atlanta, GA (My Sportsbook) - Rookie Milan Lucic netted the go-ahead goal with 3:47 remaining in regulation, as the
Boston Bruins edged the
Atlanta Thrashers, 5-3, at Philips Arena.
Glen Murray tallied his 10th goal of the season and Alexander Auld made 23 saves for Boston, which has won three in a row.
The Bruins were minus top goaltender Tim Thomas, who is sidelined with a groin pull and backup Manny Fernandez, who is out with a knee injury and a herniated disc. That left the recently acquired Auld to fill in between the pipes. Auld, acquired from the Phoenix Coyotes on December 6, registered his third win in as many starts for the Bruins.
Mark Recchi, picked up on waivers from Pittsburgh on Saturday, netted a pair of goals in his debut with Atlanta. Johan Hedberg stopped 28 shots in defeat, as the Thrashers dropped their second straight.
"I feel very comfortable with this hockey club already," Recchi said. "Only two days of practice made it easy for me to adjust. The guys have welcomed me with open arms."
Murray drew Boston even with just over a minute remaining in the middle stanza with a snapshot that beat Hedberg glove-side.
The scoring went silent until late in the third, when the 19-year-old Lucic was able to capitalize on a good opportunity. Phil Kessel had his shot stopped by Hedberg but the puck flipped up into the air and landed back in the crease, where Lucic was waiting to punch a backhander into the net.
"I've been able to make the most of my ice time. Coach has given me an opportunity to move up the line and I think we've done a good job of playing with each other and using each other," Lucic said.
Atlanta applied pressure in the waning moments with their goaltender pulled, but were unable to cash in. Marc Savard added an empty-net goal in the final seconds to ice it.
The Bruins jumped out in front 2-0 with a marker from Petteri Nokelainen late in the first period followed by one from Peter Schaefer early in the second.
Atlanta, though, lashed back with three straight goals to move in front.
Recchi provided the first two. He lit the lamp at the 10:28 mark of the second with a wrister from the high slot that sailed over the stick of Auld. Just over a minute later, Recchi executed a one-handed redirect of Eric Perrin's centering feed to knot the contest at two.
Kovalchuk put the Thrashers ahead with 3:16 left in the second on a one-timer from above the right circle.
