(My Sportsbook) - The
Atlanta Thrashers will aim for their third straight victory when they face the visiting
Montreal Canadiens tonight at Philips Arena.
The Thrashers have defeated Tampa Bay and Ottawa in their last two games after suffering through losses in their previous four contests. Atlanta will now try for three consecutive wins for the first time since posting a four-game winning streak from November 13-21.
Atlanta posted its most recent win Thursday night against visiting Ottawa as Todd White's power-play goal just 47 seconds into the third period stood as the game-winner in the 3-2 triumph. The Senators, who lead the Eastern Conference with 47 points, had won six in a row before Thursday's setback.
The deciding goal was set up nicely on a pass by Tobias Enstrom from the top of the point to the mid-slot. White then backhanded the puck out of the reach of Sens' netminder Martin Gerber.
Ottawa had some good scoring chances in the third period, including a power play to close out the game, giving the Sens a two-man advantage after they pulled Gerber in favor of the extra attacker. The Senators got plenty of pressure, but Thrashers goaltender Kari Lehtonen turned aside a long slap shot with about 14 seconds to play, sealing the victory.
Eric Boulton and Ilya Kovalchuk also tallied, and Lehtonen made 28 saves for Atlanta. The Thrashers also beat Ottawa for the first time in four games this season.
Tonight marks the end of a three-game homestand for the Thrashers, who are 8-8-0 at Philips Arena this year.
The Canadiens, meanwhile, have won three of their last four contests and are coming off Thursday's decisive victory in Washington. Guillaume Latendresse scored twice, leading the Habs to a 5-2 win over the Capitals.
Cristobal Huet stopped 35 shots for the Canadiens and Alexei Kovalev posted two assists for Montreal.
Tomas Plekanec, Sergei Kostitsyn, and Mark Streit also scored for the Habs, who were playing the first test of a season-high six-game road trip.
Montreal has an impressive 11-5-1 mark as the visiting team this season and has won three straight and five of its last seven road tests.
The Thrashers won a 3-2 shootout decision in Montreal on October 30 and have won two straight and four of the last seven meetings with the Habs. However, the Canadiens have posted victories in five of their previous seven stops in Atlanta.
