Montreal, Quebec (My Sportsbook) - The
St. Louis Blues will try for their ninth straight win tonight when they conclude a three-game road trip against the
Montreal Canadiens.
St. Louis, which is unbeaten in its last nine (8-0-1), is undefeated in four road contests (4-0-0) and most recently upended the New York Rangers, 3-2, on Sunday.
Scott Mellanby scored the go-ahead goal 6:03 into the third period and also added an assist to lift the Blues to victory on Sunday.
Dallas Drake and Martin Rucinsky also lit the lamp for St. Louis, which has outscored its opponents 41-18 on the year. Doug Weight tallied two assists, as the Blues have posted at least two goals in their first 10 games this season.
Weight has been red-hot as of late, recording 14 points (4g, 10a) in his last seven games.
After Eric Lindros took a careless high-sticking penalty away from the puck as he was skating toward his bench, Mellanby capitalized on the power play with his third goal of the season to break a 2-2 tie. A rebound bounced out to Mellanby, who fired a slap shot from the left circle and beat Mike Richter stick-side for the go-ahead goal.
Fred Brathwaite made 23 saves for the Blues, who added veteran netminder Tom Barrasso on Monday. Barrasso, who signed a one-year $900,000 deal, will be with the team tonight but will not start.
Brathwaite, who is 4-1-1 this season with a 1.96 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage, could be the odd-man out once Barrasso is ready to go, despite his solid play.
The eight straight wins marks the longest winning streak since the team took a franchise-record 10 straight in January of last year. St. Louis has gone 12 consecutive games without a loss twice, most recently from November 24 - December 26, 2000 (11-0-1).
Montreal enters Tuesday's tilt with a modest four-game unbeaten string (2-0-2) and won for the first time ever at the Air Canada Centre on Saturday with a 5-2 triumph over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Oleg Petrov and Richard Zednik each had two goals in Montreal's Hall of Fame game win on Saturday.
Jeff Hackett turned aside 30 shots for the Canadiens, who continue to rotate Hackett and last year's Hart and Vezina Trophy winner Jose Theodore between the pipes.
St. Louis has won three straight in this series and is 6-3-2 in the last 11 meetings.
