Christchurch, New Zealand (My Sportsbook) - Persistent inclement weather on Friday forced the suspension of the second round of the New Zealand PGA Championship without a shot being hit. The Nationwide Tour event was scheduled to resume Saturday, when more showers were expected. Players making the cut after the second round would play 36 holes on Sunday. A worse-case scenario would include the tournament being shortened to 36 holes, with players competing for prize money and the event being declared unofficial. Andrew Langford-Jones, the PGA of Australasia's director of tournaments, could not remember a case when a New Zealand event was shortened below 72 holes. He said officials were hopeful the tournament would still be played in full. Darron Stiles, David Hearn and Matt Bettencourt held the lead at six-under 66 after the first round. Rick Price, Dave Schultz and D.A. Points were at five- under 67. Michael Campbell, the 2005 U.S. Open champion, shot a two-under 70 and was part of a group tied for 26th place. The course was deemed unplayable at 1:30 p.m. local time (7:30 p.m. ET Thursday) as rain continued to fall. The course would have needed several hours to ready it for play. More rain and windier conditions were forecast for Saturday, though the bad weather was expected to let up by Sunday. The area had been in a drought until this week.
